Knowing the time when a son or daughter is willing to lose her virginity is a fact thatmany parents would want to know. Now they have easier thanks to social networks. At least that is what emerges from new research showing that public postings on Facebook sexual references can indicate the time of initiation of sex.

Megan Moreno of the University of Wisconsin (USA), is the author of the study, which has seen the light in the Journal of Sex Research.

"Social networking sites are immensely popular among teens and young adults, most have access to the Internet and most people do it everyday ... The sexual content is part of the profiles of adolescents in many of these networks.  About a quarter of young people has references to sex in public access profileAn example:'Marck was last night ...'. Or by posting their pictures in their underwear. Social networks may represent a new place to explore the sexual behavior of adolescents. "

Experimentation and risk

Adolescence is usually the "time of experimentation and identity development, and this experiment can also be part of the personality that is presented in the profiles. Previous studies show that approximately 41% of the profiles contained references to abuse substance and 24% talk about sex, although this latter type of comments may have consequences. Previous studies have shown that sexual or personal information online increases the risk of harassment or "cyberbullying '"

The scientists conducted research by tracking student profiles on Facebook withpublic referencesThe work was done at last with 85 boys and girls [mostly female(56%) and Caucasian (67%)].

The group of Dr. Moreno called 'displays' to those who had one or more public references to sex in your profile as 'non-exhibitors' those who ignore this information.
They were all sent a questionnaire to your email to assess its intention of maintaining a sexual relationship and risk behaviors.

In those who "confessed to never having had intimate encounters sexual intent was assessed with another test: postponement of sexual intercourse (IPS, its acronym in English) containing 12 items and has demonstrated reliability and validity to determine the intention to start in sex. the other tests were related to sexual experience (oral, vaginal and anal) and with the use of condoms, "highlights the work.

Of the 85 profiles analyzed, 18 contained sexual references (exhibitors) and most were boys. "The data show that the intention of entering the vaginal sex was statistically significant in the non-exhibitors exhibitors. However, there was no difference between the prevalence of sexual activity or number of sexual partners among each other".

"The introduction of references to sex in the social networking profiles is positively associated with intention to report on the desire to initiate sex. Facebook may represent an innovative cultural space to identify adolescents who are considering losing the virginity and can benefit from educational messages about risky sexual practices, "determined by the authors.

Parents and doctors are always looking for clues about when is the right time to have'the talk' about sex with adolescents, said Moreno. Well, "our study suggests that ifsexual content has appreciated in their profile pages on social networking isdefinitely the time to talk."
